The Fourth Annual Turks & Caicos Conch Festival kicks off at noon on Saturday, November 24 on the beach in Blue Hills with food, fun competitions, music, mojitos and other activities all afternoon to celebrate the islands most famous delicacy, historical icon, and number one export. For $15 you can sample conch dishes from over 20 restaurants and help determine, along with celebrity chefs from hip Florida restaurants, the best conch chef in the Turks & Caico Islands. Tasting begins at noon sharp and runs to 5 pm. Aqua Restaurant will be back to defend their 2006 title against entries from many other popular Turks & Caicos restaurants such as, local Blue Hills favorites Boogaloo, The Conch Shack, and Horse Eye Jacks. A strong contingent from the downtown area -- Bernies, Hole in the Wall, Tres Amigos, Tasty Temptations, Hey Joses and Elite Restaurant -- will look to bring the trophy and prize money back with them. Meanwhile the heavy hitters from the up island hotels in Grace Bay will be on hand, too Beaches, Parallel 23, Hemingways, Iguana, Club Med, Anacaona, Simba, Sharkbite, Bay Bistro, Mango Reef and Danny Buoys. The Conch Festival keeps getting bigger and better and were expecting a great turnout for all the events. Weve gotten great support from all the restaurants and hotels and it has really shaped up to be a true competition of pride and skill, said Festival president Mike Sottak. Hear live music from Lee Forbes and The Force, the Island Boyz and world renowned Junk-a-Noo and bet which sailing sloop will win races on the waters off Blue Hills. B.W.I, TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS -/E-Wire/-- Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore will be the keynote speaker of the first ever Environmental Conference hosted by the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands, in collaboration with the Ocean Conservancy and the National Coral Reef Institute, to examine the mutual interdependency between local actions and global initiatives. The conference, "Fostering a Green Culture in Small Island Nations", will be held in Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos Islands on November 18th through 20th 2007. Mr. Gore, will share his theme of Thinking Green: Economic Strategy for the 21st Century, arguing that the physical changes in our planet will eventually influence our global economy. He will encourage business audiences to consider broader issues environmental, social and political when planning economic strategy. "We are honored to bring together these distinguished leaders and organizations for a thoughtful discussion on the role the Caribbean Nations play in support of environmental sustainability in the coming millennium", expressed the Honorable Michael Misick, Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands. "It is our hope that this conference will result in policy initiatives and cooperation in environmental conservation and development in the Caribbean that will significantly impact the quality of life for our citizens." The Environmental Conference will serve as a culmination of the Turks and Caicos Government's efforts to commemorate the Year of the Environment, declared at the beginning of 2007 with two key objectives: to raise the level of environmental consciousness throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands and to develop public and private partnership arrangements in managing the environment. Accomplishments include investment of over $5 million dollars annually in the upkeep of the reef and the environment. In addition, activities including beach clean-ups, tree-planting exercises, endorsement of environmentally friendly products and equipment and environmental workshops have been held throughout the year. The Conference will be held at Beaches Resort which has been Green Globe Certified by the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism and will feature topics to address the U.N Millennium Development Goal of Ensuring Environmental Sustainability. The Turks and Caicos Islands under the theme 'Beautiful by Nature' is known for its powdery sand beaches, natural coral reefs, healthy mangroves and wetlands and tidal flats.
